Louisiana wrongful death: Bicyclist killed in recent accident

| Aug 9, 2018 | wrongful death

Police in Louisiana are looking into the recent death of a bicyclist. The victim was struck by a passing pickup truck on LA 100. If negligence is suspected in this case, the victim’s surviving family members may be entitled to seek compensation for their losses by filing a wrongful death claim in civil court.

At approximately 5:30 a.m., on July 26, a 31-year-old male was riding his bike in the westbound lanes of LA 100 when the driver of a pickup truck entered the lane in an effort to pass other vehicles in the eastbound lanes. The truck hit the bicycle, causing the victim to suffer critical injuries. The victim was taken to a hospital in Crowley for treatment. Sadly, he later died.

Little information is known about the driver of the truck. Police say that drugs and/or alcohol are not believed to have contributed to this event. As of the latest reports, no charges have been filed in this case.

In Louisiana and elsewhere, drivers are expected to share roads with bicyclists. This means that drivers need to pay attention to their surroundings and be aware of bicyclists on the road. In this case, if it can be proved that the driver of the pickup was negligent in his or her actions, compensation may be awarded for any and all recoverable damages. An experienced wrongful death attorney can assist the victim’s surviving family members in pursuing legal actions against the individual deemed responsible for their loved one’s death. Through litigation or settlement negotiations, relief may be achieved.
