A Personal Note From Joseph F. Gaar, Jr.
I am a personal injury lawyer because I like to help people who have been hurt. I think I ended up focusing on personal injury for a couple of reasons. My father, brother and brother-in-law are all doctors. I didn’t want to be a doctor, but I found the practice of medicine fascinating. Being a personal injury lawyer gives me an opportunity to reference all of the medical information I have been surrounded with most of my life. From years of deposing and consulting with medical experts, I can’t claim to know as much as my father or brother, but I sure know how to find the medical information I need to prove my clients’ cases.
The other reason I like being a Louisiana trial lawyer is that it gives me the opportunity to do something for the working men and women of Louisiana. While I was growing up, my father made us work for our spending money. I chose to work in the oil patch. I held jobs working offshore, onshore, in refineries, on pipelines and in construction. I liked the hardworking people I worked with then and I still do. The experience I gained working in these types of jobs has given me the ability to communicate and understand where my clients are coming from.
As a young associate in a large New Orleans insurance defense law firm, I always found myself sympathizing with the injured workers that sat across the table from me in depositions. I found it wrong to deny these injured workers’ claims when we knew that our clients were negligent in causing their accident and injuries. I had a hard time sleeping at night. I made the decision early in my legal career that I needed to be representing injured workers and their families, and not insurance companies. Even though I knew I would be leaving the financial comfort of a high-paying job, I decided to “hang a shingle” and begin life as a sole practitioner. The early years were extremely hard, but with time, persistence, and a great amount of dedication to each and every client, I was able to build a reputation I am still proud of. I took the cases other lawyers told me I could never win, and then won them. I try to look at each client from the perspective of the client. I tell my attorneys to treat the client as we would want to be treated if we were the client. How would I want to be treated? How would I want my family treated? I absolutely believe in treating my clients with humility and dignity. As an attorney I always have the next case to work on, the next trial to prepare for; what sets me apart from the average lawyer is that I make it my duty to remember that while I will always have another case, this client has only this case, and it has to last the rest of his or her life. My many successes over the years helped me to build a large clientele, and now not only do I have clients that refer cases to me, but I also have other attorneys that refer clients to our office as well. I pride myself on taking the difficult cases and then winning them. I know that selecting the right attorney can mean the difference between success and failure, and I never forget the importance of my work.
