Injury rate for construction workers remains same

Many jobs have risks of injury. Unfortunately, there are many ways you can hurt yourself while working, especially in the construction industry.

Statistics from 2016 show that injury rates in certain industries in Indiana have gone down, however, injuries in the construction industry have varied but remain mostly the same.

Based on data from the Indiana Department of Labor, construction has a moderate rate of injury and illness. In 2011, the rate of injury and illness for construction was 3.9, however that rate decreased to 2.8 in 2016. Within those five years, the rate has varied from between 3.4 and 2.8.

These numbers are based on a rate per 100 full-time workers.

Reasons for injury

There are a few different factors that go into to the injury and illness rate for different industries, according to the DOL. Some of these are dependent on occupational hazards and some have to do with safety training and number of employees in an industry.

According to the data, most injury and illness is suffered by workers ages 45 to 54 and employees who have been at a job for more than five years.

Working in construction can certainly be dangerous and it may be scary to hear that the number of injuries is not decreasing. Being aware of the statistics and making sure you have good safety training and take proper precautions can help you stay healthy while working.
