Seeking relief under maritime law

Quite a few Louisiana residents are maritime workers. Their working conditions are often less than ideal and, in some cases, downright dangerous. Those who employ these workers are supposed to do certain things to keep their employees safe. Unfortunately, that does not always happen, and injuries occur. Under maritime law, those injured may seek relief for their resulting losses.

Recently, a man in another state filed a lawsuit against those he believes are responsible for his injuries. While working aboard a tugboat, the plaintiff slipped and fell, causing him to suffer injuries to his neck, back, knee and other areas of his body. The injuries were severe enough that he required surgery to repair some of the damage, along with other medical treatments.

According to a recently released report, the victim alleges that the boat was operated without sufficient crew. He also asserts that the team on board at the time was not adequately trained. He is seeking unspecified damages. He would also like to see his case go before a judge and jury. It is unclear if the defendants, Edison Chouest Offshore LLC and Galliano Marine Service LLC, have issued a response to these claims.

Slip-and-fall accidents can cost Louisiana maritime workers their health and livelihood. Wanting to seek relief is certainly understandable. Maritime law does handle worker injuries a bit differently than standard workers' compensation laws. These cases can be more complex; therefore, having legal counsel on one's side who has experience handling them can be to one's benefit.
