Maritime workers may experience repetitive stress injuries

On Behalf of | Oct 12, 2018 | admiralty & maritime law

Repetitive stress injuries can happen to anyone in any field of employment. Maritime workers in Louisiana are no exception here. The men and women in this line of work perform the same hard manual tasks daily and in doing so are doing a real number on their bodies.

What are repetitive stress injuries? They are injuries caused by performing the same movements over and over, day in and day out. It is damage to muscles, nerves, and tendons that slowly builds over time.

RSI often affect people’s hands, wrists, backs, neck, shoulders, elbows and forearms. The symptoms of RSI vary per person. Some common symptoms include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Tingling
  • Weakness
  • Stiffness
  • Throbbing
  • Sensitivity to temperature changes

Any symptoms may seem like nothing major at first, but over time they will intensify and become consistent. Any of these symptoms can make it difficult for maritime workers to perform their job duties. Getting help as soon as symptoms of RSI appear is strongly advised. The longer one waits, the worse the injury will become.

Maritime workers who believe that are suffering RSI may have their treatments and losses covered through workers’ compensation benefits. Those whose injuries resulted from the negligent actions of employers, co-workers or anyone else who may be held responsible may be entitled to seek further compensation by filing third-party claims in civil court. Maritime injuries of any sort must be handled in a specific way as different rules apply to employees in this field. An experienced maritime law attorney can help Louisiana residents who have suffered RSI or other injuries on the job in seeking maximum relief for their losses.
