Louisiana maritime law: Boating accident claims a life

On Behalf of | Nov 21, 2017 | admiralty & maritime law

A boating accident in Louisiana has left one person dead and several others injured. This incident is said to have occurred near Bayou Segnette. The surviving victims of this tragic event, as well as the family members of the deceased, may turn to an attorney with experience in personal injury, wrongful death and maritime law in order to seek compensation for their losses.

According to a recent news report, the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries was called to investigate the cause of a boating accident that occurred early in the morning of Nov. 19. It is believed that a boat carrying four people hit a parked barge. After impact, the boat hit land and came to a stop. A woman was ejected from the water craft and died at the scene. A male and two other females were transported to medical facilities for the treatment of their injuries.

Few other details have been released regarding this event. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Department has been asked to help with the investigation. At this time, it is unclear if any charges are expected in this case.

There are a number of things that could have caused this boating accident. If the official cause comes down to negligence — by the individual operating the boat, owner of the watercraft, manufacturer or anyone else — the surviving victims and family members of the deceased may be entitled to seek damages through legal means. An experienced personal injury and maritime law attorney can help those interested in pursuing compensation by reviewing the details of their cases and — if it is deemed appropriate — filing and litigating legal claims in a Louisiana civil court.
