Teenagers killed in accident in Lafayette

On Behalf of | Nov 14, 2014 | Fatal Motor Vehicle Accidents

None of us want our loved ones to be involved in an accident. However, accidents do happen due to different reasons and can lead to serious injuries or deaths. A heartbreaking accident happened recently in Lafayette which involved three teenagers. Only one of them survived the accident and received serious injuries, while the other two passed away.

The children were walking eastbound towards their school when a vehicle traveling in the same direction struck them. After hitting the children, the vehicle continued moving until it ran off the road and entered a ditch. The vehicle still did not stop even after it struck a utility pole and a culvert. Later, it reentered the ditch and continued moving until it crashed into another culvert and came to rest in the eastbound lanes of the highway.

One teenager died at the scene while another passed away en route to a hospital. The third teenager suffered serious injuries and was transported to a medical center in Baton Rouge.

The driver of the car was taken into custody by officials and was taken to Lafayette General Medical Center, where he refused to talk to officials. A toxicology sample from the driver was submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab. According to sources, the driver will have to undergo psychiatric evaluation to determine if he was suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. The man served in the Army for 14 years. Once he is released from the hospital, he will face numerous charges including felony hit-and-run, reckless driving and two counts of vehicular homicide.

Any person who loses a loved one due to the negligence of another certainly undergoes tremendous grief and filing a wrongful death lawsuit can be the last thing on their mind. However, filing such a lawsuit can help the victim get answers to some questions and may provide them with the monetary compensation they need. These lawsuits can help the family of the victim hold the negligent party liable for their losses and get justice.
