Victim of hit-and-run accident is Louisiana woman

On Behalf of | Dec 17, 2012 | Fatal Motor Vehicle Accidents

Yet another Louisiana resident has become the victim of a motor vehicle accident. Like other fatal accidents, this one occurred on Louisiana Highway 76 on an early Saturday morning and resulted in the death of a middle-aged woman.

Police say that the 48-year-old female victim was likely hit from behind as she was walking partially on the pavement. Authorities have very little other information about the accident, except that it resulted in the woman’s death and that she may have been hit by a van or box-like vehicle. Police, as well as the woman’s family and friends, continue to look for answers to the tragic hit-and-run accident.

Sadly, fatal car accidents are a common occurrence in Louisiana. These accidents often can cause serious damage and leave several unanswered questions. Nevertheless, the law can provide some peace of mind when such accidents happen.

The family of a lost loved one may specifically be able to seek some compensation for medical expenses and other costs from the negligent party. However, if the compensation received from the driver or driver’s insurance company isn’t enough – or the negligent party cannot be identified in a hit-and-run accident – the victim’s family may be able to seek compensation from the victim’s insurance company if the victim carried underinsured or uninsured motorist coverage. Basically, such insurance predicts that situations may arise where an at-fault motorist either drives away or does not have sufficient insurance or personal assets to compensate the losses that flow from a motor vehicle accident. Pursuant to the contract agreement, the victim or her family may then seek legal remedies from the insurance company.

There are many ways that individuals can seek resolution after a car accident. Although it is usually satisfying to identify the wrongdoer and seek just compensation from him or her, this may not always be possible. Fortunately, the law provides another form of relief in situations in which the victim has appropriate insurance.
